Dream Becomes Sound is the first full-length album release by SONIC SUTRA, the talented quintet from Lawrence, KS. Featuring 11 tracks written by Billy Wassung, the album covers a broad spectrum of styles and sounds, ranging from modern psychedelic rock to country, reggae, and funk. It is a succinct and crisp representation of a band known for their extended live jamming and dance atmosphere. “We really wanted to strip things down for the album and make each song and each part very meaningful, “ says guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Wassung. Bassist Jon Studtmann agrees, “As much as we like to jam and get out there at shows, it was really fun and beneficial to give these songs some definitive structure.” Album highlights for the band members include the reggae-tinged Serene, psychedelic rockers Rabbit Hole and The Vault, as well as the rousing funk of Mr. Klean, featuring Courtney Rose Smith on lead vocals. Dream Becomes Sound was recorded over a period of 6 months at two locations: theCoolTV studios in Lawrence and the band’s practice studio outside of De Soto, KS. After finishing the drums tracks live at theCoolTV, the band layered in the other instrument parts and vocals from the comfort of their own home and practice space. Chris Clemmer played a critical role in this process as the album’s primary recording engineer. In addition, major credit goes to Wassung for many hours spent in production, mixing, and creating the album’s artwork. Big thanks to Chad Brothers and Marshall Baker for their musical contributions as well as our friend and sound engineer Alex Bork. An extra very special thanks to Debbie and Jim Clemmer for their unwavering support and putting up with our noise. Last and certainly not least, we’d like to thank our good friend and former Billy the Squirrel bandmate, Mikey Hannah, for contributing the final two verses of Rabbit Hole.
